Internal Medicine

Internal medicine physicians and other members of the care team diagnose and treat conditions and problems of adult patients. Often called internists, these specialists are trained to treat patients for conditions that are common, but also rare or more complex. Internal medicine physicians are specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions, including:

  • Blood disorders
  • Cancer
  • Digestive issues
  • Infections
  • Heart disease
  • Joint issues
  • Kidney issues
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Vascular issues

In addition, internal medicine physicians are able to help patients with disease prevention and improve their overall health. Many internists undergo additional education and training in order to specialize in areas such as cardiology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, and many other clinical specialties.
