At ACPNY, our providers treat a number of eye conditions, including:
- Cataracts – the natural clouding of the lens with age, corrected by surgery.
- Glaucoma – high pressure in the eye that can damage your optic nerve and potentially result in vision loss.
- Diabetic retinopathy – people with diabetes can develop abnormal blood vessels in the retina that can leak or bleed and can cause serious vision loss. It is the leading cause of blindness in people of working age.
- Age-Related Macular Degeneration – deterioration of the center of the retina, which commonly occurs in older individuals and can severely impair vision.
- Dry eyes – when not enough tears are developed to properly lubricate the eyes.
- Flashes of light and floating spots – symptoms that could indicate retinal tears or detachment.
- Conjunctivitis – also known as “pink eye,” a red inflammation of the eye caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
- Refractive errors that can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses*:
- Myopia – also known as “near-sightedness,” when your eyes can focus better on close objects than distant ones.
- Hyperopia – also known as “far-sightedness,” when your eyes can focus better on distant objects than close ones.
- Astigmatism – when an eye isn’t completely spherical in shape, resulting in blurred vision.
- Presbyopia – when distance vision is clear, but near vision becomes blurry in middle age without bifocal or reading glasses.
- Amblyopia – also known as “lazy eye,” when one eye develops weaker than the other in childhood.
- Retinal detachment – when your retina pulls away from its surrounding tissue, potentially resulting in permanent vision loss.
- Styes and Chalazia – pimple-like inflammatory bumps on the eyelids.
*Contact lens fitting is not currently offered at AdvantageCare Physicians.
We recommend making an appointment with one of our providers if you’re experiencing declining vision, eye pain or dryness, black spots, or flashes of light. We also recommend regular eye appointments for patients with diabetes, thyroid disease, rheumatological disorders, or a family history of eye disease. Our providers can perform a variety of procedures, including:
- Cataract surgery – replacing a defective eye lens with an artificial one.
- Corneal transplants – replacing part of a damaged cornea with donor tissue.
- Vitreoretinal surgery – procedures to treat macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and other disorders of the retina and vitreous.
- Oculoplastic surgery – reconstructive procedures to treat eyelids, tear ducts, and other structures around the eye.
- Cosmetic eye surgery – “eye tucks” to reduce bags and wrinkles.
