Gastroenterology

Young woman having painful stomach ache. Chronic gastritis. Stomach or menstrual cramps. Abdomen bloating concept.

Gastroenterology is a medical specialty focused on the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, liver, and biliary system. These organs are responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and removing waste from your body.

At AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY), our gastroenterologists can diagnose, treat, and manage a number of conditions, including:

  • Colon cancer
  • Stomach pain and peptic ulcers
  • Constipation and diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Heartburn and acid (gastroesophageal) reflux disease (GERD)
  • Liver disease, including hepatitis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

You should see a gastroenterologist if you have blood in your stool, chronic nausea, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain. All patients over the age of 45 should be screened for colon cancer on a regular basis, and those with a family history of colon cancer or other genetic conditions should start even sooner. Our gastroenterologists perform a variety of nonsurgical procedures and tests to evaluate your condition, including:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Small bowel video capsule endoscopy

After making a diagnosis, your gastroenterologist will consult with you on treatment options.

At ACPNY, our care approach focuses on:

  • Collaboration: Your gastroenterologist and Primary Care Provider work together as part of a Care Team and consider the “whole you” – all of the physical, mental, and lifestyle factors that impact your health.
  • Prevention: Our care approach prioritizes preventive medicine, including colon cancer screenings, which are essential in maintaining your digestive health.
  • Community: Our providers come from all different backgrounds and reflect the cultures of the patients they care for, as well as the neighborhoods they live in.
  • State-of-the-art technology: Our gastroenterological services include five-star endoscopy suites equipped with the latest technology in our Downtown Brooklyn, Clove Road, Upper East Side, Valley Stream, East New York, Flushing, and Bethpage medical offices.
  • Convenience: ACPNY has office locations across New York City and Long Island, and our broad scope of primary and specialty care means most of your care needs can be met within our practice.
