The period of time between the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the United States and the first vaccination was only 11 months. Despite this quick progress, the COVID-19 vaccines were not rushed. Years before COVID-19 emerged, researchers had already begun studying coronaviruses. You may be familiar with some of them, including the SARS and MERS viruses. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, research efforts received huge amounts of additional funding and support to move the process along even faster.
Despite the speed of the development process, the COVID-19 vaccines were still thoroughly tested during months-long clinical trials to ensure the highest level of safety and effectiveness. The vaccines were tested on many people during these trials, and no steps were passed over. Following the development and trial phases, the vaccines were authorized by the FDA. When you receive your COVID-19 vaccination, you can be confident that it’s both safe and effective.
