Karen Ignagni serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of EmblemHealth, a New York City-based not-for-profit health insurance company. EmblemHealth provides quality, affordable health care coverage and administrative services to approximately 3.1 million people in New York. The EmblemHealth family of companies includes Group Health Incorporated, HIP Health Plan of New York, HIP Insurance Company of New York, ConnectiCare, and AdvantageCare Physicians.

Prior to joining EmblemHealth in September 2015, Ms. Ignagni was President and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the national trade association representing the health insurance industry. At AHIP, Ms. Ignagni was active in working with the White House and Congressional leadership on the development of milestone health reform legislation, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Medicare Modernization Act. She also led two mergers with other organizations to form AHIP and made it the leading voice for the nation’s health plans. During her tenure, AHIP was ranked as one of the most effective trade associations in Washington.

Prior to her role at AHIP, Ms. Ignagni directed the AFL-CIO’s Department of Employee Benefits. She was a Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee and worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Ms. Ignagni has won many accolades for her leadership in the health care industry for her extensive health policy insight and leadership, earning recognition by national publications, including The New York Times, National Journal, The Hill, Time magazine, the Washingtonian, Fortune magazine, and Modern Healthcare. In 2017, Ms. Ignagni received the Heritage Healthcare Leadership Award for her work to deliver measurable improvements in health status, improving access to health care, positively impacting patient quality of care, and promoting long-term affordability for patients. In 2018, she was named one of Crain’s 50 Most Powerful Women in New York, and Health IT Leaders to Know by Becker’s Hospital Review. She serves on the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls and also serves on the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) State Insurance Advisory Board.
